Gem Sprites Are Live: The Odds, the Fall Damage Bonus, and Whether This Is the Last Variant

All nine Gem Sprites hit chests at 9AM ET on August 6. What stacks with what, the one-in-ten-million Zero Point chase, and our take on whether Gem is the final variant pack.

Gem Sprites hit chests this morning. As of 9AM ET on August 6 the full Gem lineup is live as part of New Sprite Day, announced by Epic after a week of them sitting half-visible in everyone's Locker rumor mill. If you picked one up early through the Sprite Hunt Rift Anomaly and watched it get disabled, check your Locker - Epic said those would be reinstated automatically at release, and reports so far say they were.

What actually dropped

Eight new Gems joined Gem Llama, which has been out since July 30 and which we have tracked since the day it dropped. The new ones cover both Rares (Water, Earth), the Epics (Aura, Demon, Duck), Punk on the Legendary side, and the two Mythics everyone is actually hunting: Grim and Zero Point. That makes nine Gems total, one per sprite that got the treatment - the rest of the roster didn't.

Every Gem keeps its sprite's base ability and adds a 30% fall damage reduction on top, and the two stack. Gem Demon still siphons on eliminations; it just also lets you drop off a ridge without thinking about it. Fall damage protection is not flashy, but it is the kind of bonus you stop noticing until you swap it off and immediately die to a cliff.

The odds are genuinely brutal

Gem is being billed as the rarest tier in the game, and the pre-published rates back that up. Sprite Checklist's variant table lists the Rares at 0.37%, the Epics around 0.08 to 0.10%, and Zero Point at 0.00001%. Read that last one again. One in ten million per chest. Grim's rate is listed differently across write-ups so we won't repeat a number, but every version of it is a fraction of a fraction of a percent.

Three ways to improve your odds:

  1. Hit Sprite Chests hard today - New Sprite Day boosts spawn rates.
  2. Gem Hours on August 8 will temporarily boost Gem availability again. If you can only grind one window, make it that one.
  3. Trade for them. At these rates the realistic path to Zero Point for most players is finding someone luckier than you. Our trading board exists for exactly this.

Is Gem the last variant pack?

Nobody official has said so. But we think the answer is yes, at least for this season, and here is the reasoning.

Hotspawn's coverage calls Gem "one of the last variants, at least with what we know of so far" - that is leaker chatter, not an Epic statement, so weigh it accordingly. The stronger argument is the shape of the thing. Every variant pack has been rarer than the one before it, and Gem lands at one in ten million on its chase item. There is nowhere left to go. A finish rarer than Zero Point's Gem would be a number so small it stops being a drop rate and starts being a joke, and Epic knows it.

Meanwhile Epic's energy is visibly going sideways instead: new base sprites rather than new finishes. Ironmouse just released on August 4, the crossover cadence keeps rolling, and a new sprite sells its own set of variants for free. Adding a column costs Epic design work on every existing sprite; adding a row is one sprite and instant headlines. The incentives point one way.

The honest counterweight: Epic reverses itself constantly. John Wick was retired and came back. Ironmouse was pulled and returned. If Gem sells well, a tenth finish next season would surprise exactly nobody, and if it happens the full grid here will grow a column the day it ships. Our call: Gem closes out the variant run for this season, and the next big sprite news is a roster addition, not a finish.
