Where to Find Sprites in Fortnite: Every Confirmed Source
Sprites come from chests, and Sprite Chests are the reliable one — since v41.20 they guarantee an Epic, Legendary or Mythic sprite or a better variant.
Sprites are found in chests during a match. Ordinary chests can drop one, but Sprite Chests are the source worth routing to: since v41.20 Epic guarantees each one yields an Epic, Legendary or Mythic sprite, or a higher-rarity variant. Beyond chests, a handful of sprites are tied to a specific place, time or action, and you can take one off a player you eliminate.
What are the chest types?

Did the v41.20 change actually help?
Yes, and it is the single most useful thing Epic has published about finding sprites. Three parts:
- A Sprite Chest now guarantees an Epic, Legendary or Mythic sprite, or a higher-rarity variant.
- Variants appear more frequently.
- Rare sprites drop less often, and now appear only as variants.
The practical read: if you are chasing base-rarity Rares like Air, Earth or Water, ordinary chests are now the better route. For anything Epic-tier or above, prioritise Sprite Chests over everything else on the map.
What are the rift anomalies?
Rift anomalies are match-level modifiers that change how a game plays, and two touch sprite hunting directly.
Sprite Hunt is the better documented of the two, mostly by accident: Epic's support article on Gem Sprites explains that some players obtained an unreleased Gem early through the Sprite Hunt rift anomaly, and that those sprites were then disabled pending release. Sprite Hunt also appeared as a gameplay modifier during Epic's Web Shooter Hours event.
Safe Extraction is named for what it does to the banking step rather than the finding step.
Anomalies are not always active. Check the week's event announcement rather than assuming one is running.
Which sprites are tied to a place or an action?
Most sprites are pure chest luck. A minority are not, and those are the ones you can actually plan a drop around.

Four more are biome-linked rather than POI-linked, which is a softer constraint but a real one:
- Water — near water: lakes, rivers, the coastline
- Earth — forests and wooded areas
- Fire — city and built-up POIs
- Peely — high ground and mountainous terrain, alongside its chest sources
Llama and Peely are region-weighted: both list Sprite and Rare Chests around Golden Grove and Calamari Canyon.
Can you take a sprite from another player?
Yes — and it is the same rule that costs you yours. Epic's wording on elimination is that a sprite you have not yet extracted is left on the battlefield for the next player to steal. Air's entry in our catalog names eliminated players outright as a source, and John Wick's names an eliminated carrier as one of its routes.
Get eliminated before you bank your sprite and it will be left on the battlefield for the next player to steal.
Two consequences. A player carrying something rare late in a match is a loot source, not just an opponent — and nothing you take this way is yours until you extract it, so stealing a Mythic and then dying simply hands it to a third player.
What do the Locator gizmos do?
Two gizmos bear on where sprites come from, and they are not the same tool.
Lucky Locator — Epic's wording is that it guarantees a chest containing a sprite you have not collected yet. That makes it the strongest completion tool in the game: it does not improve a rate, it removes duplicates from the outcome. Save it for a session where you are closing gaps rather than farming Dust.

What's the efficient route?
- Land for Sprite Chests, not weapons. The v41.20 guarantee is the only published edge that exists.
- Take the free ones. Soccer Pitch for Striker, any Boss you fight for Boss.
- Match the biome to the gap. Water on the coast, Earth in the trees, Fire in the city.
- Play at night for Ghost. It spawns at no other time.
- Run a Holofoil sprite — Epic confirms it raises your chance of finding variants.
- Spend a Lucky Locator when you are hunting completion, not when you are farming.
- Extract. Everything above is wasted if you die holding it.
