v42.40 After Launch: Obsession Steals, Quack Needs Mastery, No New Overrides

Updated 16 October 2026 · 5 min read

season 4 events drop data

Post-patch coverage of Fortnite v42.40 corrects day-one reporting: what the Obsession Sprite does, where Quack lives, what was vaulted, and the dates before season end.

Status - Oct 15, 2026, evening ET: v42.40 has been live for hours, so this is built on post-patch coverage, not the pre-release schedule. Labels: confirmed means Epic's own words, reported means a named outlet, rumor means neither.

Our day-one briefing went up before anyone had played a match with the new Sprites. Now people have, and two things we wrote need fixing. The rest of the patch is mostly subtraction.

Obsession is a thief, not a finder

Epic's pre-patch schedule said One Wish Willow "helps you collect other Sprites", and we repeated it. Fortnite News and Beebom both describe the live card the same way, so we call it reported and consistent:

That is a different animal from "finds Sprites for you". FRVR still says it is "expected to help collect Sprites" and floats a wish-for-a-specific-Sprite idea. That reads like pre-launch text, and two outlets describing the live card outweigh it. Nobody has published numbers yet.

Our position: this is a fighting Sprite that happens to be about Sprites. Carrying it makes you a target (the map marker only fires on removal, but a stolen Sprite is a real loss, see losing and stealing Sprites). Check the Obsession page for the computed entry.

Honey fires on your shots, per the outlets

Epic's wording we quoted yesterday was bees sent after enemies who damage you. Post-patch, Fortnite News says a ranged hit you land has a chance to spawn a swarm where the shot landed. Beebom says the same thing, with no percentage. These two descriptions disagree about who triggers it. We have not settled it: treat the trigger as unresolved and read the Honey page for the numbers we have. If the outlets are right, it is an offensive Sprite, and the 30% max-level proc we quoted is a chance per landed shot, which is a very different thing.

Quack is real, and not farmable

The day-one piece said we expected Quack tiers to share bonus XP but nobody had confirmed it. Fortnite News reports Sprite Mastery got its final page, adding Quack Sprites, and that they give bonus Sprite XP to every carried Sprite when they level up. Beebom adds that they cannot be obtained through regular means. Reported, both.

Read that carefully. Quack sits behind Mastery, not behind a chest. So the thing to do is the same boring thing as always: finish your masteries. Mastery is the account-permanent part of Sprites, which is why it is the part worth spending the last two weeks of the season on. Season 3 Quack tiers and where the new ones stand are on the sprite pages, not here.

What left, and what did not arrive

Our Oct 2 piece said three new Match Override options were in Epic's post. Post-patch, Beebom and Fortnite News report that no new Overrides arrived with v42.40 and four left instead: Super Shot, Big Boom, Action Hero and Healing Overdrive. Midas' Masterpiece (the Rift Anomaly) and the Witch Broom pocket item were vaulted too. Reported.

Going in: six Loot Hacks - Thorne's Vampiric Blade, Finger Guns, the Gatekeeper Shotgun, the Hunting Rifle, Slap Splash, and a hack for all Sprite variants. Reported. The Sweeper Shotgun fires "slightly faster", with no numbers from Epic. That will not move the meta, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

The map did not change

Beebom says there are no new map changes this update. The one addition reported is a giant pirate chest east of Sunken Shores. FRVR relays Hypex calling it the first official teaser for One Piece. That is a leaker's reading. Epic has not announced the collab. One Piece has been rumored for a long time, including a November mini-season claim, and none of that is confirmed. Rumor, and what settles it is Epic saying so.

Dates worth writing down

Smaller things

Locker sorting by Most Used, Last Used or Least Used. Like-for-Like Weapon Upgrades, which need Auto Pick Up Weapons on. A redesigned Discover screen, rolling out gradually. Fixes for sprint-while-strafing and for an unreachable Cheat Code at Golden Grove in Zero Build. All reported by Fortnite News.

What we would do

Spend the weekend on Power Hours, not on hunting Obsession. Finish any Mastery within reach before Oct 31, because that is where Quack lives. And if you were saving a slot for a Sprite that "finds other Sprites", free it up.
