v42.10's Real Changes: Weapon Balance, a Sprite Dust Discount, and a Loot Hack Nerf

v42.10 buffed the Pump Shotgun, nerfed the AR, and gave mastered Sprites a 50% resummon discount - none of it made this week's Sprite headlines.

Every Sprite article we ran this week covered X-Ray, Onigiri, Loot Hacker and the mystery knight. None of them mentioned that v42.10 also quietly rewrote how much Sprite Dust you spend and buffed the Pump Shotgun back into relevance. Here's the rest of the patch.

The Sprite Dust change nobody wrote about

This is the one that actually matters if you're grinding a collection. Straight from Epic's own patch notes:

Mastered Sprites now cost 50% less Sprite Dust to resummon.

Once you've mastered a Sprite once, every future resummon of that Sprite is half price, permanently. That stacks with the rarity-based costs Quackadex already tracks on the Sprite Dust guide - Epic didn't publish new numbers for the underlying table, so we're not guessing at digits here, just telling you the multiplier exists.

The same patch note adds a second mechanic that's easy to miss: duplicate Sprites now feed XP into the copy you already own instead of just sitting there. If you extract a second Killswitch, it levels up the Killswitch already in your Locker rather than starting a separate clock. Combined with the resummon discount, mastering early and often is now flatly the correct strategy - there's no version of this patch where hoarding an unmastered duplicate beats extracting it.

Weapon changes that have nothing to do with Sprites

If you only read our sprite coverage this week, you missed a full balance pass. Also confirmed in the same official notes:

Pump Shotgun - slightly more damage, faster equip time. This was already a strong pick; it's now the easy answer to "what do I hold for close range."
Assault Rifle - headshot multiplier down, Mythic-rarity damage down, reload slightly slower. A real nerf, not a rounding error.
8-Bit Shotgun - damage cut, in exchange for a faster equip.
Sweeper Shotgun - unvaulted, and reworked on the way back in. Standard spread instead of the old wide pattern, reload can be interrupted to fire the moment a shell is loaded, faster fire rate at the same per-shot damage, smaller mag, shorter range.
Mega Buster - faster projectile speed.

Take the AR nerf and Pump buff together and the shotgun-plus-something loadout gets better while spraying an AR at range gets worse. If you've been running AR-heavy since Override launched, this patch is the one that changes that math.

The Loot Hack economy got worse, not better

The Loot Hacks system launched loud - customize your chest pool with Sprite Dust - but the same notes quietly capped what it can give you. Loot Hacks now pull "Rare to Legendary" loot instead of the original "Epic to Mythic" range. That's a real downgrade if you were spending Dust on Loot Hacks specifically to fish for Mythics; you can't anymore.

The one thing that got easier: Dust spent on a given Loot Hack set can be freely reset and respecced while that set is active, so experimenting doesn't burn Dust the way it used to. It just doesn't carry over once the set refreshes - spend it or lose it before the rotation changes.

Three new Match Overrides shipped alongside the weapon changes - Big Head Mode, Prop Hunt (crouch and hold to turn into a prop), and Action Hero (aim while airborne to trigger a Hangtime window with bonus damage). A fourth, Sharpshooter, is scheduled for the following Thursday and increases accuracy while cutting recoil and bloom.

OG Season X is also live, separately

The same day, Fortnite OG flipped into Season X - a different map, different mode, no Sprites in it. Community coverage since launch has filled in what our pre-launch piece could only tease: the B.R.U.T.E. mech and the Automatic Sniper Rifle are back, a Pandora Rift Zone drops you into the old Borderlands crossover near Paradise Palms, and Dusty Depot is standing again where the Meteor crater used to be. If you're only here for Sprites, this doesn't touch your collection - it's a fully separate island running on its own playlist.

What this means if you're still farming

None of this changes what to hunt (that's still X-Ray, Onigiri, Loot Hacker, per this week's Loot Hacker breakdown). It changes what to do with what you already have: master duplicates instead of banking them, expect your resummon bill to drop the moment you do, and don't burn Dust chasing a Mythic through Loot Hacks anymore - that door closed this patch.
