Sprite variants explained — what each finish actually does

Updated 3 August 2026 · 5 min read

Every finish keeps the base ability and adds a bonus. Galaxy gives 30% more ammo, Holofoil finds variants, Cube grants Overdrive, Quack shares progress.

Every sprite variant keeps the sprite's own passive ability and layers a second bonus on top of it. A Galaxy Water Sprite still does everything a Normal Water Sprite does, plus it picks up 30% more ammo. Four of the eight bonuses are documented by Epic: Galaxy, Holofoil, Cube and Quack. Gold, Gummy and Gem are not, and Gem is not released at all.

What is a sprite variant?

A sprite is a collectible companion found in chests during a match. Extract with it and you own it permanently. Each sprite type exists in several finishes — Normal, Gold, Gummy, Galaxy, Holofoil, Cube, Quack and Gem — and each finish is tracked as its own separate collectible. A Gold Ghost and a Normal Ghost are two entries in your collection, not one entry with a skin toggle.

The important mechanic is additive. The variant does not replace the sprite's ability, alter it, or scale it. Epic's own wording for Holofoil calls it "a bonus effect," and the Galaxy announcement uses the same phrasing. So the practical question when you pick one up is not which is better but which second effect do I want running this match.

What has Epic actually confirmed?

Four bonuses, in Epic's own posts.

Galaxy is the one most often reported wrong. Epic's Galaxy Hours announcement states it plainly:

Galaxy Sprites have the bonus effect: Pick up 30% more Ammo when looting.

Epic Games, Galaxy Hours This Weekend

A figure of 20% circulates on aggregator sites and in AI-written listicles. It is wrong, and it appears to be a transcription error that propagated by copying.

Holofoil improves your odds of finding variant sprites — not "rare" sprites, which is a different and much repeated misreading. Epic's launch post says it "increases your chance to find variant Sprites - like Gold, Gummy, Galaxy, and of course Holofoil." No percentage has ever been published, so any site quoting one is guessing. The same post notes Holofoil sprites are slightly easier to find than Gold ones.

Cube grants Overdrive while you are caught in the Storm. Epic revealed the Cube finish through its own channels ahead of the July update; games media covering the reveal at the time explicitly noted the effect had not yet been stated, so anything published before the reveal describing the Cube bonus was speculation.

Quack is the outlier — it is the only variant you earn rather than find. Epic's v41.30 notes put it on the Sprite Mastery track:

Whenever your Quack Sprite gains progress, every other Sprite you're carrying in your match inventory also gains an extra 50% of that progress.

Epic Games, v41.30 Act III: Battle Royale Update Notes

That makes Quack a levelling tool rather than a combat one. Carrying it alongside three sprites you are trying to master is worth more than its own passive.

What has Epic not confirmed?

Gold, Gummy and Gem.

Gold is widely described as granting bonus elimination XP and as costing more Sprite Dust to resummon. Gummy is widely described as returning extra Sprite Dust on extraction — but the figure varies by source between 10% and 20%, which is itself the clearest evidence that nobody quoting it has an official number. We list the direction of these effects because they are consistently reported and consistent with in-game behaviour; we do not list a percentage, because there isn't one to list.

Gem is not obtainable. It appears in the variant set and has been described as reducing fall damage, but it has not released, Epic has not documented it, and its bonus may change before it does. Gem variants are excluded from your completion denominator here for exactly that reason — you cannot be marked incomplete for something no one can get.

How should you read a sprite site, including this one?

This corner of the internet is unusually polluted. Sprite pages are cheap to generate, high in search traffic, and generated pages cite other generated pages, so a single wrong number becomes a consensus in about a fortnight. The 20% Galaxy figure is the clearest example.

Two rules that will serve you well:

  1. A number without a source is a guess. Epic publishes bonuses in event posts and update notes. If a claim has a percentage but no first-party link, treat it as folklore.
  2. "Rare" and "variant" are not synonyms. Holofoil affects variant find rate. Several sites say "rare sprites," which describes a different mechanic and will make you play for an effect that does not exist.
