How Sprite Extraction Works in Fortnite
A sprite is only yours once you extract it. Reach an Extraction Site or use a Portable Extractor — die first and it's left for someone else.
A sprite you pick up in a match is only borrowed. It joins your permanent collection when you extract it — carry it to an Extraction Site and defend it while the timer runs, or use a Portable Extractor to bank it from anywhere. Get eliminated first and Epic is explicit: the sprite is left on the battlefield for the next player to steal.
What does extraction actually do?
Extraction is the step that turns a temporary in-match pickup into a permanent entry in your collection. Epic's v41.00 update notes describe the whole loop in one sentence: find a sprite in a match, get to an Extraction Site, defend your pickup while the timer runs, and you bank it to your collection for use in future matches.
Until that timer completes, nothing is yours.
Where do I find a sprite?
Sprites are found in chests during a match, including dedicated Sprite Chests. From v41.20 onward Epic changed those odds: a Sprite Chest now guarantees an Epic, Legendary or Mythic sprite, or a higher-rarity variant; variants appear more frequently; and Rare sprites drop less often, and only as variants.
You can also take a sprite off another player who was carrying one when you eliminated them — the same rule that costs you yours.
What happens if I'm eliminated before extracting?
You lose it, and someone else can gain it. Epic's wording: get eliminated before you bank your sprite and it will be left on the battlefield for the next player to steal.
Three consequences worth internalising:
- The sprite does not return to your collection, your lobby, or a recovery queue. It is on the ground.
- Any progress you built on it during that match goes with it.
- A player who never found that sprite themselves can extract it and keep it permanently.
What is the Portable Extractor?
A consumable that removes the travel problem. Epic describes it as extracting your equipped sprite from anywhere on the island — for that rare sprite you have been searching for.
It answers the worst situation in the mode: holding something rare, a long way from a site, with the storm closing. Confirmed ways to earn one, from Epic's v41.10 notes:

Which sprite should I extract?
Whichever one you are actually holding when the opportunity appears. Extraction is binary and permanent: a banked Rare beats a Mythic left in the grass.
Two habits follow from the rules above.
- Extract early rather than optimally. A second sprite can be found and extracted later in the same match. A lost one cannot.
- Save Portable Extractors for variants you don't own. Your collection tracks variants separately, so a Gold you already have is worth much less than a Normal you don't.
Getting a sprite to max level is no easy feat, so we recommend attempting it across multiple runs.
That advice is only safe because each extraction banks the sprite. The level resets if you lose it; the ownership doesn't.
