Every New Sprite in v42.20: Crash, Blinky, Morgana, Pond, Birthday and the Bounty Hunter Variant
Five new Sprites, the Bounty Hunter variant on twenty of them, Mega Man's empty variant slots and two unfinished placeholders: the complete September 17 Sprite briefing, with what is live today and what is staged.
Five new Sprites, one new variant tier that shows up on twenty of them, three Mega Man recolors that aren't drawn yet, and two placeholders Epic hasn't finished. That's v42.20 for Sprite collectors, and this is the whole list, entry by entry, with what each one does and whether you can actually get it today.

Servers went down at 4 AM ET on September 17 and Epic's own downtime estimate runs to about 6 AM ET (Beebom's early notes). Everything below is current as of that morning. Where a claim comes from a dataminer rather than Epic, it says so. Where a number could still be tuned before you see it on a card, assume it can.
The short version
- Five brand-new Sprites: Crash Bandicoot, Blinky, Morgana, Pond and Birthday. All five are in the normal chest pool with Cheat Master and Gold odds identical to every other Season 4 Sprite.
- One new variant tier, Bounty Hunter, on twenty Sprites. It does not drop from chests. It only levels from eliminations.
- Mega Man's Cheat Master, Gold and Loot Hacker forms exist in name only. Their icons are blank silhouettes and he is still base-only in the chest pool.
- Two placeholder Sprites, Ghost Reload and Phase Dash, have text-only icons and no variants. Not this week.
- The Loot Hacker door via Loot Hacks is reportedly closing. Read that section before you spend Dust.
Every new Sprite in v42.20
Each entry gives the ability as the Sprite card describes it, the level scaling where it's readable, the variants that exist, and whether it's obtainable on day one. The numbers are the values that shipped in this build. Epic tunes these between patches without notes, so treat them as a snapshot, not scripture.
Crash Bandicoot Sprite

Image: Epic Games.
Ability: "(Active - Jump In Air) Triggers a whirlwind attack, damaging and knocking back nearby enemies." Jump, then hit jump again in the air and Crash spins. The spin does 5 damage to players at level 1, 7 at level 3 and 10 at level 5, with a fixed knockback that shoves people sideways and up. Cooldown drops from 12 seconds at level 1 to 5 seconds at max. It also hits the environment harder than it hits players (5 to 15 build damage), so it's a door-opener as much as a weapon.
Variants: Base, Cheat Master, Gold, Loot Hacker, Bounty Hunter.
Day one? Yes. Crash is weighted into the chest pool at the standard split (roughly 94% base, 3% Gold, 3% Cheat Master per Crash roll). His card says he's "spotted near high and mountainous areas," which Vice reported from FireMonkey's leak and which lines up with the Birthday and Mega Man spawn hint below.
Position: 10 damage on a 5 second cooldown is not a kill tool. It's a mobility-and-disruption Sprite: knocking a boxed-up player off a ramp is worth more than the chip damage. Fun, not meta.
Blinky Sprite

Image: Epic Games.
Ability: "Grants cloak for a duration when you take damage." The cloak lasts 3 seconds at level 1 and grows half a second per level to 5 seconds at max, on a flat 5 second cooldown that does not shrink with level. So at max level you are invisible for 5 of every 10 seconds of a sustained fight, which is a lot.
Variants: Base, Cheat Master, Gold, Loot Hacker, Bounty Hunter.
Day one? Yes, standard chest odds. Blinky's card reads "found in the world at nighttime," the first Sprite in this generation with a time-of-day hint. Vice's report agrees. If you're hunting him specifically, drop in matches that start after dusk in the day cycle and check the same spots you'd check for anything else.
Position: This is the strongest defensive Sprite of the five and it is not close. Cloak-on-hit punishes the person who shot first. Expect a tuning pass.
Morgana Sprite

Image: Epic Games.
Ability: "Increases the effectiveness of healing items." Both health and shield items scale the same way: 15% more at level 1, 30% at level 2, 50% at level 3, 75% at level 4 and double at level 5. A max-level Morgana turns a Med Kit into a full heal and change, and a Small Shield into 50.
Variants: Base, Cheat Master, Gold, Loot Hacker, Bounty Hunter.
Day one? Yes, standard chest odds. Morgana's card carries no spawn hint, so there's nothing to say about where beyond "chests, like the rest." Techtroduce's write-up of the ShiinaBR leak has the collab context if you want it.
Position: Doubling heals is quietly the best passive in the season for anyone who plays the long game. Pair it with Onigiri (Overdrive on consume) and you have a sustain build the game didn't have last week.
Pond Sprite

Image: Epic Games.
Ability: "(Active) Jump shortly after landing to trigger a Super Jump, if charges are present. Gain charges over time." Three charges maximum at every level. A charge takes 20 seconds to come back at level 1 and 12 seconds at level 5. The jump itself gets stronger with level, from 80% of full strength at level 1 to 110% at max, and the timing window to trigger it after landing is about 1.65 seconds.
Variants: Base, Cheat Master, Gold, Loot Hacker, Bounty Hunter.
Day one? Yes, standard chest odds. No spawn hint on the card.
Who made it: Pond is a Design-A-Sprite winner, designed by Pine & Kiri and picked from over 20,000 entries (Beebom's winners coverage, Game Rant). That makes three of the five winners live: X-Ray and Onigiri shipped in v42.10, Pond ships now. Honey has not appeared at all, and Dumpster Dive is covered in the "further out" section below because it exists as a card with no art and an "ability not implemented" note.
Birthday Sprite

Image: Epic Games.
Ability: "Opening chests has a chance to spawn a piece of cake. Eliminations can spawn cake at max level." The chest chance is 50% at level 1 and climbs 10% per level to a guaranteed slice at level 5. Each slice restores 20 health and 20 shield. The elimination drop uses the same 50% to 100% curve once it unlocks.
Variants: Base, Cheat Master, Gold, Loot Hacker, Bounty Hunter.
Day one? Yes, standard chest odds, and the card says "spotted near high and mountainous areas." This is the ninth-birthday Sprite. FireMonkey's quest leak (via Techtroduce) has the birthday quest set built around cakes and presents landing this update, with a Back Bling, a Pickaxe and an FNCS-themed reward attached. Epic hasn't published the event dates yet. If the pattern from the 7th and 8th birthdays holds, it's a two-week window, and this Sprite may be the one that goes away when the party does. We'll update this page the moment Epic posts dates.
Position: A guaranteed 20/20 heal on every chest at max level is better than it sounds in a loot-heavy route. Not exciting. Reliable.
Bounty Hunter, the new variant tier

Image: Epic Games. The Bounty Hunter finish is a purple holographic wrap on the base Sprite.
The card text: "Chance to find sprites when eliminating opponents. Only gains sprite XP from eliminations, unless sprite has special XP rules." FireMonkey reported the same text from an early Xbox build, and the August variant-roadmap leak called this tier "Reaper" before it got its shipping name.
Two things about it matter more than the color.
It doesn't come from chests. The chest pool for every Season 4 Sprite still rolls base, Gold or Cheat Master only. Bounty Hunter isn't in it, the same way Loot Hacker wasn't. Epic hasn't said how it's earned. Loot Hacker's confirmed path was a fourth Victory Royale with Gold equipped (our v42.10 explainer); a fifth win on top of that is the obvious guess, and it is only a guess. We'll update this section when someone actually unlocks one.
It only levels from eliminations. Every other variant levels the same way its base Sprite does. Bounty Hunter throws that out. If you extract with a Bounty Hunter Sprite and play for placement, it sits at level 1 forever. The exception clause ("unless sprite has special XP rules") covers Sprites like Victory Crown, which only levels on wins anyway, and Klombo, which levels on consumables.
Our take: this is the first variant designed for a player who isn't the typical collector. Every finish before it rewarded looting, surviving or mastering. This one rewards fighting, and its bonus (more Sprites from elims) feeds the same loop. If you're a fragger, it's the best Sprite-hunting tool the game has shipped. If you're a route runner, it's a tier of your checklist you'll have to change how you play to fill. That's a real cost and it's worth saying out loud.
The twenty, each with its own icon. Mega Man is not on this list. Neither are the two placeholders.
8-Bit Blaster (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Base ability: an 8-Bit Shotgun in your next chest plus a score multiplier for it. Catalog page: /sprites/eightbitblaster.
Adventurer (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Base ability: upgrades a random inventory item on each level up. Note the elimination-only XP rule makes those upgrades a lot harder to trigger. /sprites/adventurer.
Birthday (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. A new Sprite and a new variant in the same patch. Cake on chests, cake on elims at max level.
Blinky (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Cloak on damage taken. Probably the best pairing on this list: Bounty Hunter wants you in fights, Blinky keeps you alive in them.
Bushranger (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Bush on a timer, bush on elimination at max level. /sprites/bushranger.
Crash Bandicoot (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Whirlwind on air-jump. New Sprite, new variant.
Jazz Jackrabbit (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Double jump. /sprites/jazzjackrabbit.
Jonesy (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Regen after taking damage. /sprites/jonesy.
Killswitch (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Hangtime with tighter aim. The elimination-only rule suits this one fine. /sprites/killswitch.
Klombo (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Random items per level, and Klombo normally levels on consumables only. This is exactly the kind of "special XP rule" the card text is carving out. Watch how it behaves before assuming either rule wins. /sprites/klombo.
Morgana (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Better heals. New Sprite, new variant.
Onigiri (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Overdrive on consume. /sprites/onigiri.
Overshield (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Overshield that scales with level. /sprites/overshield.
Pond (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Super Jump charges. New Sprite, new variant.
Shadow (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Auto-reloads holstered weapons, and the equipped one at max level. /sprites/shadow.
Sonic (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Faster sprint per level. /sprites/sonic.
Storm Scout (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Overdrive after storm damage, future circles revealed at max level. /sprites/stormscout.
Tails (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Hover on air-jump. /sprites/tails.
Victory Crown (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Only levels on wins, which is the other obvious "special XP rule." /sprites/victorycrown.
X-Ray (Bounty Hunter)

Image: Epic Games. Periodic enemy marking. /sprites/xray.
Mega Man: three variants in name only
Mega Man (/sprites/megaman) now has Cheat Master, Gold and Loot Hacker entries alongside his base form. Don't get excited. All three icons are flat black silhouettes, the kind of placeholder Epic uses before the art is done, and his chest roll is still 100% base with no Gold or Cheat Master weight at all. He is also the only Season 4 Sprite with variants that did not get a Bounty Hunter form.
So: the slots exist, the Sprites don't. We're not adding them to the tracker until they have art and a way to obtain them. A handful of collectors here have already logged and mastered the base Mega Man since v42.10, and that is the only Mega Man there is today.
Two placeholders that aren't finished

Image: Epic Games.
Ghost Reload. The icon is literally the word "HEADSHOT" on a tile, while the card text underneath says "Grants cloak for a duration upon reloading." Those two don't agree with each other, there's a headshot-damage multiplier curve attached that has nothing to do with cloaking, and there are no variants. This one does not resolve to a finished Sprite. Don't plan around it.

Image: Epic Games.
Phase Dash. Same story: a text tile for an icon, a card that reads "Grants Phase Dash charges that recharge over time. Phase Dash allows you to phase through some objects," and no variants. The dash itself already exists in the game as a Cosmic Thunder power-up, so the mechanic is real. The Sprite isn't, yet.
Neither of these is in the chest pool. When either gets real art we'll cover it.
Further out: cards with no art at all
These exist as ability cards with an "ability not implemented" note, no icon, no variants, and nothing in the loot pool. HYPEX surfaced most of them and Techtroduce collected the list. Rumor tier, every one:
- Dumpster Dive (the remaining Design-A-Sprite winner, by StinkyPrincessGoose): find food when you jump into a hideable prop, and that food heals extra. The card is there. Nothing else is.
- Vampire: restore health as a percentage of damage dealt, scaling with level.
- Cube: low gravity.
- Meowscles: faster weapon swaps.
- Squibbly: dive into a fishing hole and it fishes itself.
- Super Shot: a rocket fires after enough shots. Note there's also a "Super Shot" Match Override with the same idea, so this may have moved from Sprite to Override.
- Overdrive Reload and Spawn Rings (rings drop when your shield breaks, a Sonic-flavored idea): cards only.
What would confirm any of these: an icon, or a spot in the chest weights. None has either.
Where to find them: the map this week
Two spawn hints are new and specific. Crash Bandicoot, Birthday and Mega Man all carry "spotted near high and mountainous areas." Blinky carries "found in the world at nighttime." Vice reported both hints in its FireMonkey round-up. Morgana and Pond have no hint at all and should be treated as standard chest spawns.
That "high and mountainous" hint is the same one Mega Man has carried since v42.10. We haven't been able to make it mean anything more specific than the ridgelines in a match; treat it as a weighting, not a guarantee.
The map itself is changing under you this patch, and every change is at a place collectors already route through:
- Battlewoods is getting what Beebom calls "a major overhaul (which was long overdue)," and HYPEX expects it to be replaced outright by a Halloween-themed POI for Fortnitemares (Vice). Community-reported. If Battlewoods was your first chest cluster, re-scout it today before you commit.
- The Arcade landmark is being prepped for the reported Five Nights at Freddy's Fortnitemares collab (Beebom). Community-reported. Arcade cabinets are Cheat Code spawns and the retro theme of this season's Sprites points here anyway; watch for a chest-density change.
- Geno's Machine in the map center is "likely to undergo changes as the storyline progresses" (Beebom). Community-reported, and vague. The center of the map has been the extraction-point sweet spot all season; if it becomes a story set-piece, your extraction timing changes with it.
- The storm reportedly grows in size and intensity this week (Beebom), and a "Dynamic Storm" Match Override accelerates it further. Storm Scout's max-level circle reveal just got more valuable.
Our optimal farming route was written for the pre-v42.20 map. It's still the right skeleton, but the Battlewoods leg is now suspect and the Bounty Hunter tier means a pure looting route can't finish your checklist anymore. That guide gets rewritten once we've run the new map a few dozen times, and this page will link the new one when it's up.
Fortnitemares is reportedly under two weeks away (Backers on X calls v42.20 the final Season 4 update before it), which makes this the last normal patch of the season. Anything you want from the current map, get it now.
What changed about how Sprites work
Good and bad, in that order of how much they matter.
Bounty Hunter changes the collecting loop. Covered above, but to be blunt: it's the first tier you cannot fill by being a good looter. Expect the community's "complete" percentages to fall this week, ours included. That's honest, not broken.
Loot Hacker via Loot Hacks is reportedly closing. Beebom's early notes say "Loot Hacker Sprites in Fortnite are not going to be obtainable via Loot Hacks anymore." Beebom doesn't source that line, so treat it as reported. If it's right, the only remaining path is the four-win ladder from our Loot Hacker explainer, and the Dust you'd have spent on Loot Hacks for a chance at one is better spent resummoning. We'd rather Epic had said this in the patch notes than let people find out at the vending machine.
The Loot Hacks pool itself is refreshed: Hyperburst Pistol, Mammoth Pistol, Reaper Sniper Rifle, Deadeye DMR, FlowBerry Fizz and Rocket Ram join it (Vice). Plus Rebecca's Guns and Lucy's Monowire from the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners collab and the Kingdom Key Mythic. 8-Bit Blaster's guaranteed shotgun is unchanged.
Sprite Mastery gets its next reward stretch. FireMonkey's leak (via Techtroduce) has milestones from 15 to 28 mastered Sprites: 5,000 Sprite Dust at 15 and 26, 40,000 XP at 17, 20, 23 and 27, Spicy Tacos at 18, Extraction Accelerators at 19 and 22, Portable Extractors at 24, Llama Supply Drops at 25, and an encrypted Outfit called Radicali at 28. Beebom confirms "new rewards (XP and Gizmos) are going to be added this week" and an arcade-themed Back Bling that displays your mastered Sprites. Reported, not yet on the track in-game as of this morning.
Mastery still halves resummon Dust. That's a v42.10 rule, not a new one, and it's the single biggest reason to master rather than hoard. Our v42.10 Dust discount write-up has the numbers.
New Match Overrides touch Sprites directly. Beebom lists four for this patch: Crash Bandicoot (whirlwind on jumps for everyone), Big Boom (no fall damage, explosions on landing), Dynamic Storm, and Healing Overdrive (heals grant Overdrive). FireMonkey found six in the update that aren't switched on yet (Techtroduce), Big Boom among them, plus Prize Plus (HP orbs on elims), Health Siphon, Super Shot, Endless Shooter and Thundaga (a squad Override that hands out the Kingdom Key). Healing Overdrive stacked with Morgana and Onigiri is the combo to test first.
The variant roadmap is now five deep and reportedly heading to eight. Base, Cheat Master, Gold, Loot Hacker, Bounty Hunter today. FireMonkey's August roadmap (Vice) adds Gummy and Holofoil returning plus a Trick or Treat tier for Fortnitemares, and Jazz Jackrabbit is already set up for Gummy, Holofoil and Trick or Treat forms, which is the first hard sign the roadmap is real. Reported, and the timing is Epic's. Our position: eight finishes per Sprite is too many for a system whose whole appeal was "one chest, one guy, keep him forever." Every added tier makes the checklist longer without making any Sprite more interesting. The Bounty Hunter bonus is the first one that at least changes how you play. The recolors don't.
Sprite Garden is unchanged. No new Garden mechanics this patch, and the Garden quests that landed are the Back Bling quests above, not a Garden expansion.
What carries over
Nothing you already own is affected. Mastery is permanent, the Pod keeps every Sprite you've mastered, and the Garden holds everything you've extracted, across generations. The long version is in The future of Sprites and the mechanics are in Sprite Mastery explained.
Three practical things:
- Season 3 (Runners) Sprites are still retired, still yours. Nothing in v42.20 brings them back. Your Quackadex completion counts them for you and only you, the way it always has.
- Birthday is the one to grab first if you care about eventual scarcity. It's the only new Sprite tied to a dated event. If Epic pulls it when the birthday ends, mastering it before then is the difference between a permanent entry and a hole. We don't know that it gets pulled. We do know that's the cheapest insurance in this patch.
- Don't extract a Bounty Hunter if you won't fight with it. A level 1 Bounty Hunter in the Garden is still a Bounty Hunter for your checklist, so extract it for the entry. Just don't expect it to grow.
Your own numbers, updated as you log: /sprites for the catalog, your dex for completion. Every count on this site is computed from what's actually obtainable, which is why we won't print a "112 Sprites" total here. The number that matters is yours.
Confirmed, reported, rumor
- Confirmed (shipped in the update): the five new Sprites and their abilities; the Bounty Hunter variant on twenty Sprites and its card text; Mega Man variant slots with silhouette icons; the Ghost Reload and Phase Dash placeholders.
- Reported (dataminers and outlets, credited inline): Loot Hacker leaving Loot Hacks; the mastery reward track through 28; the Battlewoods, Arcade and Geno's Machine changes; the six inactive Match Overrides; the Gummy, Holofoil and Trick or Treat roadmap; birthday quest rewards.
- Rumor: every "further out" Sprite; how Bounty Hunter is unlocked; whether Birthday leaves with the event.
Updates go at the top of this page. If you see a Bounty Hunter unlock in the wild, or a Birthday end date, support@quackadex.com reaches us.
